Google is large and in charge. Yep, they are powerful. And Google says your website now MUST have an SSL certificate. So what if you don’t have an SSL? Google may flag your website. What does this mean? You’ll see the message “This site may harm your computer” beneath the site URL. Why, you ask. It’s really for your benefit. Google just wants to keep your information safe and keep you and your website users happy.
What is an SSL? Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that ALL data passed between the web server and browsers remains private. Your personal, sensitive information such as credit card details or passwords on pages such as payment pages, online forms and login pages stays safe and secure. Without a secure connection your sensitive information can be intercepted – stolen by the bad guys, those nasty hackers – and used for fraudulent purchases and activities.
Ensuring that your website has an SSL certificate and serves pages via HTTPS will make sure your user’s information is safe. Your customers will see the lock icon and green address bar that indicates the site is safe to use and any information they input will be safe. They can trust you.
